What is Yoga?

YOGA (योग) is an ancient physical, mental, and spiritual practice that originated in India. The word ‘yoga‘ comes from Sanskrit and means “to join,” “to yoke,” or “to unite,” symbolizing the union of body, mind and soul (consciousness).

While often popularized in the West for its physical postures (asanas), yoga is a holistic discipline that encompasses much more. It traditionally involves:

  • Physical postures (Asanas आसन): A series of movements and poses designed to improve strength, flexibility, balance, and overall physical health.
  • Breathing exercises (Pranayama प्राणायाम): Techniques that involve conscious control of the breath to calm the mind and energize the body.
  • Meditation (Dhyana ध्यान): Practices aimed at focusing the mind, promoting mental clarity, and achieving a state of inner peace.
  • Ethical principles: Guidelines for living a purposeful and harmonious life, often referred to as Social Conduct (Yamas यम) and Personal Conduct (Niyamas नियम).

The History of Bharatiya Yoga:

Bharatiya Yoga’s origins can be traced back over 5,000 years to ancient India, specifically the Indus Valley Civilization. Its earliest mentions are found in the Rigveda (ऋग्वेद), one of the four sacred texts of Hinduism. Over centuries, it evolved through various periods, with significant contributions from texts like the Upanishads (उपनिषद) and the Bhagavad Gita (भगवत गीता)

Maharshi Patanjali, around the 2nd Century, compiled the essence of yoga into the “Yoga Sutras (योग सूत्र)” outlining the “Eight Limbs of Yoga” Ashtanga Yoga(अष्टांग योग), which serve as a comprehensive framework for yogic practice.
